Responsible for the instruction of swimming techniques, participant safety, and the enforcement of established standards of conduct at City operated swimming pools. American Red Cross certification in Lifeguard Training and Water Safety Instruction is required. Previous water safety instruction experience is preferred. Must pass a swimming test consisting of: 500-yard continuous freestyle swim in less than 10 minutes; 50-yard sidestroke supporting a 10 lb. diving brick in less than one minute, 10 seconds; treading water supporting a 10 lb. diving brick for two minutes. All applicants must come prepared to swim during their interview and must bring in all current certification cards/WSI certification.
Nature of all recreational jobs requires good physical strength, coordination, and dexterity. Must work outside in hot, humid weather, and be able to work evenings and weekends. Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor applicants must submit a copy of their American Red Cross certification cards with the employment application.
WSI applicants must be currently certified in Standard First Aid and CPR. Absence of non-prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.
